Building Skills. Creating Opportunities. Strengthening Sickle Cell Families.
The Alaafia Digital Career Training Program is a free, virtual workforce development initiative created for individuals and families affected by Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) across the United States.
Living with Sickle Cell Disease can make traditional education and employment difficult. Chronic pain, unpredictable pain crises, medical appointments, hospitalizations, fatigue, and other health-related challenges can interrupt school, training, and employment and affect the financial stability of individuals and families.
Alaafia created the Digital Career Training Program to provide a more flexible pathway to education, employment, entrepreneurship, and economic independence.
Because the program is delivered virtually, participants can develop practical and marketable digital skills from home while having greater flexibility to manage their health, family responsibilities, education, and other needs.
Program Overview
The Digital Career Training Program is delivered entirely online and combines structured instruction with practical, hands-on learning.
Participants commit approximately 10 hours per week for 10 weeks and receive access to training designed to build skills for employment, remote work, freelance opportunities, entrepreneurship, and continued education.
Training may include:
- Instructional videos and demonstrations
- Hands-on assignments and projects
- Practical skills development
- Individual and group learning opportunities
- Mentorship and guidance
- Career readiness support
- Portfolio development
- Digital tools and resources
Technology Access
Lack of access to technology should not prevent someone from participating.
Eligible participants who do not have access to an appropriate computer or device may receive a laptop or tablet from Alaafia to support their participation in the program.
Who Can Participate?
The program is open to individuals age 10 and older who are part of a family affected by Sickle Cell Disease.
Participants do not necessarily have to be the individual living with Sickle Cell Disease. Eligible participants may include individuals with SCD as well as family members whose lives, education, employment, or economic circumstances are affected by the disease.
Registration
Interested participants must complete the Digital Career Training Program registration form.

Participants are encouraged to develop practical projects and portfolios that demonstrate their abilities and can support future employment, continued education, or independent work.
Why Flexible Careers Matter for Sickle Cell Families
For individuals living with Sickle Cell Disease, traditional employment structures may not always accommodate unpredictable health needs.
Remote and digital careers can provide greater flexibility, allowing some individuals to work from home, develop independent businesses, pursue freelance opportunities, or build careers that may be more adaptable to medical appointments and changes in their health.
For family members and caregivers, flexible career skills can also create opportunities to balance employment with caregiving and family responsibilities.
Building a Stronger Future
The Alaafia Digital Career Training Program is designed to help individuals and families affected by Sickle Cell Disease move beyond barriers and toward greater opportunity.
Through accessible technology, practical education, career development, mentorship, and digital skills training, we are helping participants develop tools they can use to pursue their individual goals.
Your health should not determine the limits of your potential.
