Purple Agenda
Standing Together to End Domestic Violence
Each October, in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Alaafia hosts the Purple Agenda, a community awareness and education initiative dedicated to increasing understanding of domestic violence, supporting survivors, and strengthening community efforts to prevent abuse.
The Purple Agenda brings together survivors, advocates, healthcare professionals, law enforcement, educators, community organizations, faith leaders, and the public to promote awareness, education, healing, and action.
Domestic violence affects individuals and families of every age, culture, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, socioeconomic background, and ability. Through this event, Alaafia works to challenge misconceptions, reduce stigma, and encourage communities to recognize the signs of abuse, support survivors, and promote healthy, violence-free relationships.
Event Goals
The Purple Agenda aims to:
- Increase public awareness of domestic violence and its impact on individuals, families, and communities.
- Educate communities about the different forms of abuse, including physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, financial, technological, and coercive control.
- Promote healthy relationships, safety planning, and violence prevention.
- Connect survivors with culturally responsive resources, advocacy, and support services.
- Increase awareness of the unique barriers experienced by African immigrant communities and other underserved and vulnerable populations.
- Encourage collaboration among healthcare providers, victim service organizations, law enforcement, government agencies, and community partners.
- Honor the strength, resilience, and courage of survivors while promoting healing and hope.
Community Education
The Purple Agenda includes educational presentations, panel discussions, survivor stories, professional training, resource sharing, and community conversations designed to increase understanding of domestic violence and strengthen community responses.
Participants learn about available services, legal protections, healthcare resources, safety planning, and ways to support survivors with compassion, dignity, and respect.
Our Commitment
Alaafia is committed to creating safer communities through culturally responsive education, survivor advocacy, prevention, and partnerships. By increasing awareness and reducing barriers to support, we help survivors access the resources they need while encouraging communities to work together to prevent domestic violence.
