- Domestic violence
- Sexual assault
- Sexual harassment
- Stalking
- Dating violence
- Other forms of abuse and exploitation
Services include crisis intervention, safety planning, advocacy, referrals and ongoing support.
Human Trafficking Prevention and Response
Alaafia assists survivors of human trafficking by providing resources, advocacy, referrals and support services that help individuals rebuild their lives and regain independence.
Healthcare and Mental Health Support
We help community members navigate healthcare systems and connect them with medical, behavioral health, and wellness resources. Our programs promote emotional well-being, trauma recovery, and access to quality care.
FGM Support Services
Alaafia provides confidential, culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and survivor-centered support for women, girls, individuals, and families affected by or at risk of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).
Our services are designed to help survivors and families safely navigate healthcare, mental health, legal, immigration, victim services, and other systems while maintaining dignity, confidentiality, cultural respect, and individual choice.
Direct Support and Advocacy
Alaafia provides confidential support to individuals affected by FGM. Advocates and navigators help individuals identify their needs, understand available services, communicate concerns, and connect with appropriate providers and community resources.
Services may include individualized advocacy, service coordination, referrals, appointment assistance, follow-up support, and navigation across multiple systems.
Healthcare Navigation
Alaafia assists survivors in navigating healthcare services related to their individual needs.
Navigation may include assistance accessing:
- Primary healthcare
- Gynecological care
- Reproductive healthcare
- Prenatal and maternal healthcare
- Sexual health services
- Pain-related healthcare
- Specialty medical services
- Behavioral and mental healthcare
Navigators can help individuals prepare for appointments, identify questions or concerns they want to discuss, understand referrals and follow-up instructions, and communicate with healthcare systems when appropriate.
Alaafia does not replace licensed medical professionals. Our role is to help individuals understand, access, and navigate appropriate professional care.
Mental Health and Emotional Support
FGM may be associated with trauma, fear, anxiety, relationship difficulties, painful memories, or other emotional concerns.
Alaafia connects individuals with culturally responsive and trauma-informed behavioral health professionals and provides supportive navigation throughout the referral and care process.
Domestic and Sexual Violence Advocacy
FGM may intersect with other forms of gender-based violence, including domestic violence, sexual violence, forced marriage, coercive control, and family or community pressure.
When these concerns are identified, Alaafia can provide crisis intervention, confidential advocacy, individualized safety planning, referrals, and connections to appropriate victim services.
Safety and Prevention
Alaafia works with individuals and families who are concerned that a girl or woman may be at risk of FGM.
Support may include confidential consultation, individualized safety planning, education, appropriate referrals, and coordination with qualified professionals when necessary.
We recognize that prevention work must protect girls and women while avoiding unnecessary stigmatization of entire cultures, nationalities, religions, families, or communities.
Legal and Immigration Navigation
When FGM-related concerns involve legal or immigration matters, Alaafia helps individuals connect with qualified attorneys and appropriate legal resources.
This may include navigation related to immigration, asylum, family law, protection, child safety, or other relevant legal concerns.
Alaafia provides navigation and advocacy but does not substitute for licensed legal counsel.
Language and Cultural Navigation
Language and cultural differences can create significant barriers to receiving appropriate care.
Alaafia helps individuals communicate with healthcare professionals, attorneys, victim service providers, government agencies, and other organizations while supporting culturally responsive communication and informed decision-making.
Practical Support
When resources and program eligibility allow, Alaafia may provide or coordinate practical assistance that removes barriers to services, including transportation and connections to other essential community resources.
Family and Community Education
Alaafia provides culturally responsive education to individuals, families, and communities regarding FGM, health and safety, available services, prevention, and accessing appropriate professional assistance.
Our approach encourages respectful dialogue and community engagement rather than shame, stereotyping, or cultural condemnation.
Professional Training and Technical Assistance
Alaafia provides FGM education, training, and technical assistance for:
- Healthcare professionals
- Nurses and medical staff
- Behavioral health professionals
- Domestic and sexual violence advocates
- Social workers
- Community health workers and navigators
- Government and community agencies
- Educational institutions
- Victim service organizations
- Other professionals serving affected populations
Training can address FGM awareness, culturally responsive communication, trauma-informed engagement, healthcare barriers, survivor-centered practices, appropriate referrals, and coordination between service systems.
Cross-System Coordination
A central component of Alaafia’s model is serving as a bridge between individuals and the systems intended to support them.
When appropriate and with the individual’s consent, Alaafia works collaboratively with healthcare providers, victim service organizations, legal professionals, government agencies, educational institutions, and community organizations to improve coordination and reduce barriers to care.
Alaafia believes that every individual affected by FGM deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion, respect, and cultural understanding.
Our goal is not only to connect individuals with services but also to strengthen the systems serving them.
Through direct support, advocacy, healthcare navigation, education, professional training, prevention, and community partnerships, Alaafia works to create pathways toward safety, healing, health, independence, and long-term well-being.
